Best Buttercream Frosting

This vanilla buttercream frosting is light, fluffy, and perfectly smooth. It is such a classic and versatile topping that pipes beautifully onto cakes, cupcakes, cookies, or anything else that needs a little extra sweetness! This simple frosting recipe will turn any homemade recipe into a bakery-worthy dessert ๐

Make Now or Prep Ahead
If you’re ready to frost right away, whip up the buttercream as directed and use it immediately for the smoothest, fluffiest texture. Freshly beaten buttercream spreads beautifully and pipes so smoothly onto any dessert.
If you’d prefer to prep this ahead, you can make the frosting in advance and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. When you’re ready to use it, let it come to room temperature and re-whip it for 1-2 minutes until it is light and fluffy again. Both methods work perfectly, so you can plan around your baking schedule with no stress!

Why I Measure in Grams (and You Might Want To, Too)
If youโve ever made the same recipe twice and gotten two totally different results, the measuring method is often the reason.
Professional bakeries almost always measure by weight, not volume. Measuring cups leave room for inconsistencyโespecially with ingredients that pack differently depending on how you scoop or pour them. A scale removes all of that guesswork.
One of the biggest offenders is sugar. Different sugars (and even the same sugar measured by different people) can vary wildly in volume, but 100 grams is always 100 grams. Measuring by weight gives you repeatable, bakery-consistent results and cuts down on extra dishes at the same time.
A food scale is one of the best (and most affordable) investments you can make for your kitchen if you love baking and want your recipes to turn out exactly the same every time.

Best Buttercream Frosting
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter room temperature
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp heavy cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Method
- In a stand mixer, beat the butter on medium speed for 2โ3 minutes, until smooth and slightly lighter in color.
- Gradually add in the powdered sugar and mix until a smooth paste forms. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure everything is fully incorporated.
- Pour in the heavy cream and mix on low speed until combined.
- Then increase the speed to high and beat for about 60 seconds. This step helps incorporate air into the frosting, making it light and fluffy.
- Mix in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated and smooth.
- Use immediately, or transfer to a sealed bag/container and store in the refrigerator until ready to use. Let it come slightly to room temperature and re-whip if needed before frosting.
